A Change of Perspective

Many people don’t understand is that Angkor Wat isn’t just one building. It’s a temple complex. And it’s one of the biggest religious monuments in the world. It will take a few days if you decide to see them all. Here’s a great rundown of what there is to see. [Angkor Temple Guide Index](http://www.canbypublications.com/angkor-cambodia/angkor-temple-guide.htm)

After leaving Angkor Thom we headed to the next thing we could find. While it seemed that some of the buildings were the same…

There were as many that looked quite different.

I felt like each building had it’s own personality, it’s own story to tell.

Some places were covered with incredible detail.

With the sun playing through the trees I found myself struck by the splendor in front of me.

I found delightful surprises around each corner.

I got to marvel at the sheer bigness of the place and wonder how exactly they built all this centuries ago.

And I giggled at the fact that trees can look like water.

This behemoth in particular gave me a glance into what it felt like to be a poly pocket.

The weight of the tree took it’s toll on the building, cracking through the rock. It was wild to feel that small.

Some buildings were left as they were found. I tried to imagine the moment that the bricks toppled over, tired from holding themselves up.

As if that weren’t a magical enough experience? We went up.

Sitting at the top of a wat built centuries before I was even alive was nothing short of amazing.

I can safely say that this day was one of my favorite adventures. I have always loved running around and exploring, seeing what I could see. But confronted with an experience such as this, it changed my perspective. Seeing age old ruins, imagining what they represented when they were built, climbing on art created by people so many years ago, feeling a sense of agelessness coupled with the very real press of gravity and time sent the focus away from me. It was like the navigation on your phone switching from street view to the one where you can see the buildings standing tall. It is a shock that all of a sudden you sense that you aren’t as big as you thought.
